Every parent wants to see their child experience success in the classroom. So, what’s the best way to help your student prepare for tests—and keep a healthy mindset while doing so? Here are five simple tips for parents to help their child perform his or her best on testing day:

  1. Make sure your student gets a good night’s sleep and eats a healthy breakfast, and encourage them to do their best each day.
Well-rounded meals and a regular sleep schedule will help your child succeed in the classroom on a day-to-day basis. On testing days, it’s especially important to make sure that your child gets a good night’s sleep and starts the day with a filling breakfast.

  2. Remain positive and relaxed with your student about the testing experience.
A little encouragement can go a long way in helping students walk into testing days feeling confident—which, in turn, can have a huge effect on their performance. Praise your child for the work that he or she does to prepare for testing.

  3. Remind your child of the importance of listening to directions, reading everything carefully and not rushing through the test.

  4. Don’t schedule appointments, trips or other interruptions during testing.
Interruptions can break the students’ concentration, and showing your child that testing is a priority encourages them to do their best.

  5. Contact your student’s school if you have questions about testing.
Regular communication with your child’s instructor can help you gain insight into his or her progress. Make a point of meeting or talking with your child’s teacher on an ongoing basis to understand what your child is working on, what they will be tested on, and the areas that he or she is exceling or struggling in.
