Musical Theatre Audition Requirements
YPAS Musical Theatre
The Musical Theatre Department of the Youth Performing Arts High School of Louisville, Kentucky is a comprehensive four year integrated program wherein a student studies Singing, Acting and Dance (Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Theatre & World Dance). The curriculum is designed to provide the young artist the all round training they will need to gain entry into the top level Musical Theatre training programs in Colleges, Universities or Conservatories.
The Musical Theatre Major is an extremely demanding curriculum, both physically and academically. During their four years the Musical Theatre Majors have the advantage of studying with many of the master teachers in the departments of Theatre, Dance and Vocal Music. Every class has approximately 8 to 15 students so each student receives hundreds of hours of personalized and individual instruction.
Requirements
Applicants are evaluated on their acting, singing, and dancing abilities. Applicants are asked to prepare a short, one-minute contemporary or upbeat monologue and to sing a one to two-minute song from a Broadway-style musical, which will be accompanied by a staff pianist. Your sheet music should be cut and arranged in the appropriate key.
Applicants should come to the audition prepared to participate in a short movement evaluation that will take place in a group setting.
Auditionees will be asked to do a brief cold reading, to match pitch with the piano, and answer an open response question about their experience in musical theatre.
Please dress nicely and bring something to change into for your dance portion of your audition. If you have them, jazz shoes are appropriate to wear.
