Background

The goal of physical education is to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to establish and maintain physically healthy lifestyles. According to the Shape of the Nation Report (2016), "studies show that active and fit children consistently outperform less active, unfit students academically in both the short and the long term. They also demonstrate better classroom behavior, grater ability to focus and lower rates of absenteeism." As a result, students need exposure to a quality physical education program that includes opportunities for the exploration of a variety of lifetime physical activities.
