The 7th grade students have started a fundraiser with the Ugandan Water Project. Our goal is to raise enough money to supply a school in Uganda with a rainwater collection system. This will ensure that the school and surrounding village will have clean drinking water. The fundraiser will end with a Water Walk in October to show our 7th grade students the difficulty in transporting water long distances. This project coincides with our current ELA unit, in which we read the novel A Long Walk to Water.
These rainwater collection systems last 20 years, so this will help generations of people avoid water-borne diseases. In areas where clean water is scarce, many people have to move to find safe water sources. With a rainwater collection tank in the village, people can avoid moving to find water.
The rainwater collection tank will save villagers many hours a day-- they won't have to spend a large portion of the day walking to find water, boiling it to kill germs, and waiting for it to cool.
OAS participated in this fundraiser in 2021 and 2022. In the past, we raised several thousand dollars. Our goal this year is to raise $3800. If you would like to donate, you may do so with any 7th grader or through the website below. If you use the website to donate, you can "Add a Dedication" so a specific 7th grader gets credit for the donation (they are competing to see who can raise the most money).
