About
Students & Families
As a parent at Field Elementary, you can expect to be treated as a valuable partner in your child’s education. We value parents and understand the critical role you play in your child’s success. You can expect school staff to communicate with you frequently and to be available to meet with you to review your child’s progress.
Parent Responsibilities
Parents have a special responsibility to partner with school staff to educate their child. It is vital that you support and reinforce the importance of acquiring a quality education and developing good character. Your responsibilities are:
To keep a positive attitude about school.
To encourage your child to give maximum effort in completing assignments and preparing for tests.
To expect and encourage regular attendance and punctuality.
To communicate regularly with teachers and school staff.
To inform the school office immediately of changes in student information— address, phone number, emergency contact, etc.
Addressing Concerns
Field Staff is committed to addressing concerns in a timely fashion. Please follow these guidelines to address any concerns:
Classroom Concerns—Contact the teacher first. The teacher needs to hear the concern so that he or she can work with you to make sure your child’s needs are being met. In most cases, this will resolve the issue. If your concern is not resolved as a result of this communication, please schedule a conference with either the assistant principal or school counselor.
Bus Concerns—Contact the assistant principal, or the bus compound. Parents—for no reason—should attempt to board a JCPS school bus to address a concern. This is considered trespassing and is punishable by law.
Parent Teacher Association
The PTA at Field is a vital part of our school community. Our PTA’s many programs and activities directly benefit students and families. All Field families and community members are encouraged to join the PTA. If you would like to volunteer your time and talents, there are many opportunities for you to do so. Please contact the PTA for more information via their PTA Website.
Visiting School
At Field , we encourage parent, family, and community involvement. Some guidelines have been developed to maintain a safe and productive learning environment for students:
All School Visitors—All visitors who enter the school building must sign in at the attendance desk and wear a nametag before proceeding to any other part of the building. Visitors entering the building during the school day must ring the bell to gain access to the building. Visitors may be asked to present picture identification and state the reason for their visit before being allowed into the building.
Dismissal Safety—To protect their safety, all students will be dismissed via carpool, bus, or as a walker. Procedures are outlined in the “Transportation Basics” section of the handbook. Parents are not permitted to enter the building and wait in the lobby to pick up their child.
Delivering Items—Parents bringing their child’s lunch, instrument, backpack, homework, etc., must leave the item at the attendance desk. School staff will make all classroom deliveries. Parents are not allowed to deliver items to the classroom during instructional time. If you are visiting during your child’s regularly scheduled lunch, you are welcome to sign in and take these items to your child at that time.
Classroom Visits—Please keep in mind that during the school day, teachers are responsible for teaching students and disruptions to instructional time should be kept to a minimum. If you would like to visit the classroom during the instructional day, please make arrangements with the teacher prior to your visit. In-class visits and in-class volunteering are for adults only. Please make other arrangements for younger siblings.
Volunteering at School
For the safety of all students and staff, volunteers are required to complete a School Volunteer Records Check. If you do not wish to sign up using the online system, please click HERE to download the form. Once the volunteer records check has been completed, approved volunteers may accompany students on field trips and assist teachers with small groups and individual students. If you have already completed a School Volunteer Records Check Form, it may not be necessary to do another one. Our office staff is happy to make sure you have one on file!
Field Trips
Parents are expected to adhere to all deadlines for the collection of field trip permission slips and money. Field trips must be approved weeks before the trip actually occurs, and tickets must be purchased in advance. Students who have not submitted required paperwork and payment to the classroom teacher (unless Fee Waiver-approved) will remain at school on the day of the field trip.
Only volunteers who have completed the School Volunteer Records Check Form and are age 21 years or older may chaperone a school field trip. It is not permissible for younger siblings to accompany a chaperone on a field trip. Only students in approved classes may attend a field trip.
School-Based Decision Making Council
With the enactment of the Kentucky Education Reform Act (KERA), parents were recognized as important stakeholders in their children’s education. Elected parent representatives from the Bowen parent community may participate as members of our School-Based Decision Making (SBDM) Council. The council is responsible for setting policy in many areas of school procedures and processes. The council meets monthly throughout the year, and all meetings are open to the public. Meeting dates, agendas, and minutes are posted in the school lobby.
Parent/Teacher Conferences
Two official Student-Led Conference Days are scheduled each year. Please refer to the JCPS School Calendar for specific information about those dates. In addition, teachers are happy to meet with parents throughout the school year when a need arises. This can be done in person, virtually, by phone, or through email correspondence. If you would like to schedule a conference, please contact the teacher. All teacher contact information is available on our school website. Teachers will respond within 24 hours and set up an appropriate time for you to meet.
Reward and/or incentives, classroom parties, and school celebrations shall promote student wellness.
When food is provided as a reward and/or incentive, or during classroom parties and school celebrations during the school day, all food items shall meet the USDA Smart Snacks in School regulations. When food or beverages are provided to students, accommodations will be made with special dietary needs and medical conditions. All foods provided will be commercially prepared and include a product ingredient statement and nutrition facts label.
