August 3, 2023—Todd Kessinger has been named the new Executive Administrator of Security and Investigations for Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS). In this role, Kessinger will lead the Security & Investigations Unit.

“Joining JCPS is an incredible opportunity for me to make a meaningful impact on the lives of students, teachers, administrators, and the entire school community,” Kessinger said. “Together, we can foster an atmosphere of trust, where students feel safe and inspired, and teachers can focus on delivering exceptional educational experiences.”

JCPS Security & Investigations includes a team of sworn law enforcement officers and noncommissioned employees. The unit is responsible for the safety and security of more than 96,000 students and 17,000 employees.

“My experience collaborating with law enforcement agencies has equipped me with valuable insights into developing strong partnerships to ensure safe and secure environments,” Kessinger said. “One of my key strengths is establishing and maintaining effective communication channels with stakeholders, in our schools and community.”

Most recently, Kessinger has been the senior security professional at LG&E-KU. In this role, he coordinated safety planning at multiple sites, investigated matters relating to the internal and external security of the company, led all threat assessments, and worked with other law enforcement officers throughout Kentucky and Indiana.

Kessinger began his career as a firefighter in the City of Louisville in 1994. He transitioned into law enforcement in 1998 when he joined the Louisville Police Department. Kessinger served in multiple police capacities, including patrol, investigations, supervision, and tactical support. He worked in the Homicide, Robbery, SWAT, and Special Events units while with LMPD. Kessinger worked his way up the ranks, retiring from LMPD in April 2019 as the Major of the Major Crimes Division.

“Todd’s extensive law enforcement experience in both the private and public sector will bring a vital perspective to the team, ensuring a robust and effective approach to ensuring the safety of our students and staff,” said Dr. Katy DeFerrari, JCPS chief of staff. “We are confident his leadership will help us grow our team and continue to implement top measures to maintain the safety of our district.”

Kessinger holds a bachelor’s degree in organizational leadership from the University of Louisville, a master’s degree in justice administration from the University of the Cumberlands, and graduated from the Southern Police Institute.
