The History of Hazelwood Elementary School
Hazelwood Elementary originally opened as a county school in 1906 in a one-room framed house; it was named for its neighborhood. A two-room framed building was dedicated for the school in October of 1907. Four short years later in 1911, Hazelwood was organized as Hazelwood Graded Common School. By 1922, the city of Louisville annexed the area severed by the school so Hazelwood Elementary became a city school.
Thirty years later in 1952, a new school building was dedicated across the street from the old school which was sold by Louisville City Schools. After several address changes, in 1954, the permanent address for Hazelwood Elementary was established as 1325 Bluegrass Avenue.
Currently, Hazelwood Elementary is home to approximately 460 students soaring in kindergarten through fifth grade, 55% of our hawks being multilingual learners, and another 150 students soaring in our Early Childhood program.
