Visual Art 1 - Course Description

Art 1 Syllabus

Visual Art I serves as the foundation course for all students interested in visual art. This course is a study of the elements of art and principles of design and how they relate to various two-dimensional and three-dimensional media. Students will receive instruction in the following studio areas—design, drawing, painting, mixed media, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, and textiles—which will increase basic art skills developed in the middle school program. This course will provide experiences to increase student knowledge and ability through art history, analysis of form, aesthetics, cultural heritage, and art production. The student will be introduced to career opportunities in the visual arts.

Students in this class have made a commitment to the study of art and are expected to maintain a professional attitude at all times. All students will be involved in long-term art projects throughout the course of the year. Grades will be based on a student’s individual progress, assignment requirements, and established teacher expectations. Active participation in critiques, reading assignments, written assignments, and sketchbook assignments will all be required for this class.

Visual Art 2 - Course Description

Art 2 Syllabus

Visual Art 2 serves as a progressive course for students interested in continuing their study in visual art. This course is a study of the elements of art and principles of design and how they relate to various two-dimensional and three-dimensional media. Students will receive instruction in the following studio areas—design, drawing, painting, mixed media, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, and textiles—which will build art skills developed in previous years. This course will provide experiences to increase student knowledge and ability through art history, analysis of form, aesthetics, cultural heritage, and art production. The student will be introduced to career opportunities in the visual arts.

Visual Art 3/4 - Course Description

Visual Art 3/4 is an advanced course in art in which the student works on teacher-planned and individually selected projects to develop fine art and craft. Experiences in art history/cultural perspectives, art criticism, and aesthetics – which complement the studio experience – are integral parts of the course. The student in Visual Art 3/4 is expected to keep a portfolio of artwork that reflects developing technical skills in their own artistic styles.
