Current JCPS Policy

“students shall not use/ activate and/or display a personal telecommunication device on school property during the course of the instructional day unless they are acting in the capacity of a volunteer firefighter or Emergency Medical Service (EMS) worker.”

2025-26 - Expectations for devices

  • The JCPS Policy will be followed

  • Not in the hallways

  • Not in the cafeteria

  • Not in the classroom

  • Not in the restrooms

  • Not outside during PE

  • In offices is OK, but only for emergencies and with approval

Why?

  • Cell phone and telecommunication devices are affecting instruction

  • They are affecting students mental health

  • Students are losing the art of face-to-face conversations

What is a Personal telecommunication device (KRS 158.165) but not limited to - 

  • Cell phones

  • MP3 players

  • iPods

  • Video gaming systems

  • Headphones

  • Smart Watches

  • Earpods

  • Airpods

  • Earbuds

Things we will work through

  • Noise canceling headphones, but they cannot be connect to phone or chromebook

  • Documented Physical Health concerns - such as diabetes monitors

This will be challenging and we need your help

  • Start now talking to your student about the adjusted expectations

  • Consider purchasing items that will work with the new expectations

  • Think about how you communicate with your student, while they are at school
