When facing the building, go to the ramp on your right, marked "OML." Proceed down the ramp to the double doors, ring the bell, ask for Language Services, and wait for assistance.
The Language Services Department facilitates certified interpretation and document translation. We enhance district communications with JCPS international populations in their native languages.
Language Services provides four types of interpretation services: in-person, scheduled virtual, over-the-phone, and video remote.
In-person interpretation is recommended for lengthy appointments, complex issues, and situations with multiple participants in one location.
Over-the-phone interpreting is recommended when you need instant access to an interpreter (emergencies, parent visit or call, scheduling appointments, etc.)
Video Remote Interpreting is recommended when you need instant access to a face-to-face interpreter (emergencies, parent visit, impromptu conference, etc.)
Scheduled virtual interpreting is recommended for lengthy appointments, complex issues and situations. It offers convenience and accessibility.
Language Services facilitates translations of formal communications and forms that are used throughout the district and school.
Before submitting a translation request, Language Services recommends visiting the JCPS Translation Library and searching for districtwide documents already translated.
Translations are for reference only. Families should complete forms in English before returning them to their child's school.
Language support is available for schools/programs to help families complete forms.
For school-related matters, parents and families can access language support in three ways.
Please see the list of JCPS schools and contact information.
The purpose of the "I Speak" card is to help you obtain a trained interpreter for immediate assistance. It identifies your native language and notifies the school that an interpreter is needed. It also explains how the school may access interpretation services. The district will give you an "I Speak" card at enrollment or ask school personnel to give you one.
When visiting your child’s school in person or when calling school personnel may say, “Wait for language support” in English. This indicates that the school understands the need for language assistance and is working to get a certified interpreter to help.
In 2021-2022, JCPS adopted policy 08.1348. This requires certified interpreters and translators for formal communication (not daily student/employee work) with JCPS's international communities, like parents visiting schools/central office, making phone calls, and holding parent-teacher conferences.
Language Services office provides certified interpretation and document translation services in compliance with JCBE policy 08.1348. We offer comprehensive language support for all forms of communication with JCPS international populations.
Language Services follows JCBE policy 08.1348 by using certified interpreters and translators network of contracted interpreters and translators trained and assessed for proficiency and who adhere to the JCPS Confidentiality Statement.
