The County Employees Retirement System (CERS) is part of the Kentucky Retirement Systems (KRS) and pays a monthly benefit upon retirement based on the type of retirement and years of credited service.

Participants also contribute to the Social Security and Medicare Systems.

Eligibility

Participation begins the first day of employment for all classified employees in a permanent full-time position working an average of 80 hours per month.

Cost

The employee contributes on a pretax basis 5 percent of gross earnings. The Jefferson County Board of Education (JCBE) contributes an amount determined by CERS. For 2006-07, it is 13.19 percent, and for 2007-08, it is 16.17 percent of the eligible employee's gross earnings. 

The employee contributes 6.2 percent to Social Security and 1.45 percent to Medicare on wages after all eligible tax-exempt deductions. The board matches Social Security and Medicare contributions.
