Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) engages each and every student through effective teaching in a caring, supportive environment. We offer a variety of learning opportunities through unique schools, programs, and activities that will inspire your child to reach their fullest potential.
This booklet will help you learn about the special offerings that each individual school can provide your child and family. With nearly 100 elementary schools, there are varied and differentiated academic experiences for every kind of learner, while maintaining a focus on JCPS’s three main pillars: Backpack of Success Skills, Racial Equity, and Culture and Climate.
Every JCPS school has dedicated and experienced teachers, technology for every student, family support services, and engaging after-school programming. They all contribute to our students’ sense of belonging as we teach them core skills like reading and math. But students are also introduced to art, music, other languages, and social skills as they learn to communicate and flourish in a constantly changing world.
The 2024-25 school year will be the second in which all students have had the opportunity to attend a school close to their home. We’re proud that the Jefferson County Board of Education (JCBE) created these opportunities by approving our School Choice Proposal in 2022. We’re finding that families, particularly those in the Choice Zone, are taking advantage of the option to attend a school near their neighborhood, creating more opportunities for students and their families to participate in after-school activities and generating significant pride in their school.
Please take the time to review the multitude of offerings we have available, and determine how they align with the learning style and interests of your child.
At JCPS, our mission is to always do what’s best for our students. We hope this booklet will help you determine what’s best for your child.
JCPS has nearly 100 elementary schools, all of which focus on core subjects like reading, writing, math, science, and social studies while also introducing students to a variety of others, such as the arts, technology, and world languages.
To better predict your child’s educational path, JCPS is moving away from “clusters” and now designates elementary school zones by high school networks. Each elementary school is grouped into one of 15 feeder patterns—groups of three to eight JCPS elementary schools located within a geographic area connected to a specific JCPS high school. JCPS guarantees your child a seat at one of the schools in their designated zone, determined by your child’s home address.
While most elementary school students choose to attend one of the schools in their zone, JCPS has other programs to best match your child’s learning style or interests. We offer a variety of elementary magnet schools and magnet programs—many of which are nationally recognized or focus on a specialized area, such as performing arts—as well as traditional magnet schools that emphasize back-to-basics learning in a highly structured environment. JCPS also offers students living in the Choice Zone* an option to attend school close to home or farther away.
Review Options
Decide what type of learning environment works best for your child, and explore school options, programs, and/or offerings at each school.
Choose School
Every student will find a sense of belonging at JCPS. To find that space for your child, start by compiling a list of schools that best fit their needs and aspirations
Apply
During the application period: Nov. 6–Dec. 22, 2023
If you apply during this period, you will receive your child’s school assignment by April 2024. An application is required for all students entering a JCPS elementary school for the first time.
Dates to Remember
Applications open: November 6 , 2023
Application deadline: December 22 , 2023
Acceptance notification: April 2024
Register Online
Students who have not previously attended a JCPS school, including all incoming kindergartners, must register online, at any JCPS elementary school, or at the Office of School Choice. Returning JCPS students who have registered in the past don’t need to register again.
After you register, JCPS will verify your information and send you an email to complete your application, which can take up to two business days. Incoming kindergartners may then apply to schools within their zone as well as any magnet schools or magnet programs. To find out which zone you’re located in, call the JCPS Demographics Office at (502) 485-3050 or use the online JCPS SchoolFinder search tool.
Apply
An application is required for all students entering a JCPS elementary school for the first time. In addition, applications are required for elementary students who have moved or want to apply to a magnet school or magnet program. Families are encouraged to apply online, but in-person application options are available.
You can apply in person at the following locations:
JCPS School Choice Office: 4309 Bishop Lane
JCPS Office of Multilingual Learners: 1325 Bluegrass Avenue
Important to Note
Submitting a magnet application doesn’t guarantee admission, and submitting false information will void an application.
Waiting lists are not kept from year to year.
Magnet applications can only be edited during the application period.
Siblings of current or former magnet school students do not receive preference in the application process, but those who share the same date of birth (twins, triplets, etc.) are treated as one application. In these cases, parents must submit a separate application for each child.
Students must be a resident of Jefferson County to attend a magnet school or program. If families are relocating, contact the JCPS School Choice Office at (502) 485-6250.

What is a zone?
A zone is a group of three to eight JCPS elementary schools located within a specific geographic area connected to a specific JCPS high school. This will better predict your student’s educational path. JCPS guarantees every student a seat at a school in their zone, which is determined by their home address.
Important to Note
During the application process, you will be asked to rank schools in your designated zone by order of preference. You can also apply for up to two other options, such as a magnet school or a school-based magnet program. Please consider the following during the registration and application process:
All incoming kindergartners and students new to JCPS must register with the district before applying for school.
After registering, students entering kindergarten may apply to any magnet school, magnet program, or school within their zone. Ranking of the schools in the zone is required. Magnet selections are optional.
An application is required for all new JCPS students and students who have moved, regardless of which school they are interested in attending.
If you live in the Choice Zone, you will rank school options that are close to home or options that are farther away.
JCPS keeps siblings together in elementary school zones. The district also considers parental choice, space, the student’s home address, and the diversity of the student body when placing students at schools. Due to capacity constraints, not all families can or will receive their first school choice.
You may register your child for school regardless of immigration status and/or a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence. For more information, contact the Office of Access and Opportunity at (502) 485-3650.
Students living within the Choice Zone (black outline) have the choice to attend an elementary, middle, or high school close to home or a designated school farther away.
Incoming kindergarten students, students new to JCPS, or students with an address change in the Choice Zone must complete an application to rank their close-to-home or far-away school selections..
All students may also apply for magnets and transfers.
The example below shows the elementary school choices of a student who lives in the Ballard High School Choice Zone. This student's close-to-home options are Portland, Atkinson, Breckinridge-Franklin, and Byck. Their far-away options are Chancey, Dunn, Norton Commons, Norton, Wilder, and Zachary Taylor. Students will rank their close-to-home options or far-away options, not both.
JCPS has developed 15 new feeder patterns that allow parents to see the elementary, middle, and high school their child will attend based on their home address.
Percentages represent the portion of the student body to attend the indicated high school.
