Students’ reward is to “buy” books
April 9, 2024—Four Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) elementary schools are installing new vending machines. No, the machines aren’t filled with snacks or beverages. They’re filled with books! Each machine is called “The Book Nook”. They have been unveiled at Atkinson, Chancey, Engelhard and Hazelwood Elementary Schools.
“These new vending machines will promote literacy, encourage reading habits, and foster accessibility, diversity, and inclusion among our students,” said Director of Library Services Lynn Reynolds. “With just the touch of a button, students can embark on literary adventures, discovering new worlds, perspectives, and ideas.”
Reynolds said an anonymous donor purchased the vending machines which cost about $5,000 each. JCPS Library Media Services will restock the machines one time then the schools will be responsible for purchasing the books to place in the machine. The cost will be $2,500 to $3,000 a year.
The machines offer equitable access to books for all students. Each school will determine how students earn golden tokens to “buy” books through, for instance, good grades and attendance, acts of kindness, birthdays, accomplishments, or exceptional reading efforts. Students could also be rewarded with a trip to The Book Nook for meeting learning targets. Teachers could also use the vending machines to reinforce desired student behaviors and habits.
Each vending machine is stocked with a diverse selection of books suitable for elementary school students, catering to a wide range of interests and reading levels. By placing the machines directly within the schools, books become more convenient for students and allow them to explore new worlds and expand their imaginations.
Reynolds said the plan is to install more vending machines in more schools each year.
