Highland Middle School's Gardening Club teaches kids about agriculture and gardening

Oct. 23, 2023 - Environmental Science teacher at Highland Middle School Lauren Dowell leads the Gardening Club - better known as Sprout Squad. She describes her role as, "a guide on the side for a bunch of kids who really like plants."
While this is her first year at Highland, she took over an existing program. Not only do the students get a chance to learn about gardening plants, but they also are planning to put in a sunflower bed located in the front of the school. The garden at school includes produce such as okra, tomatoes and raspberries.
"There's happiness and there is light, and love and wonderfulness and goodness and I get the opportunity to bring that to kids in my classroom and in my garden. Well, our garden," Dowell said with a smile.
