Students help celebrate exciting new play structure

Oct. 11, 2023—King Elementary School cut the ribbon on a brand new playground right before fall break.

"It's fun. Everybody likes it," said Charli, a third grade student at King. "We've been waiting for it."

The school's previous play structure was installed in the 1970s. There are now two playgrounds at King.

So far, Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) has installed new playgrounds at six schools, with 20 more schools waiting to be added.

"It's kids being active and having fun," JCPS Superintendent Dr. Marty Pollio said. "It's so critical that every student in JCPS has the opportunity to have great facilities."

King Elementary Principal Rhonda Hedges said this new playground will be great for students.

"It's awesome. They have a place to go to get that energy out in the afternoon," she said. "They've been dying for it to be open."

The highest priority for one student was having the chance to be around his classmates in a fun setting.

"I'm excited!" said Stephon, a King student. "I get to have fun and play with everyone."
