Nannette Bowman and Sedekia Peter talk about teaching sixth graders

By Dyuce Woodson

July 19, 2023 - Over the course of the 2022-23 school year, we followed two sixth-grade teachers. Sedekia Peter teaches math at Ramsey Middle School and Nannette Bowman teaches social studies at Johnson Traditional Middle School.

Peter was in his third year of teaching but it was his first full year without non-traditional instruction (NTI) and Bowman taught her first sixth-grade classes.

Bowman says, while getting used to teaching the youngest students in the building was an adjustment, she found it to be a rewarding experience.

"That’s the wonder of sixth grade. They become, officially, like, little rising seventh-graders," Bowman said. "So, they’re excited. It’s wonderful."

Peter said this past school year was when he began to "feel more like a teacher."
