May 12, 2023 - The national award-winning principal at Norton Commons Elementary is moving across town to become the new principal at Maupin Elementary School in West Louisville. Allyson Vitato will finish the school year at Norton Commons before taking the reins at Maupin on July 1.

“It has been an honor and a privilege to open Norton Commons and work with the school community for the past seven years,” Vitato said. “While I will miss the students and families at Norton Commons, I am excited about the opportunity to build upon the rich history at Maupin Elementary to ensure all students are challenged and reaching their full potential.”

Allyson VitatoVitato has spent her 23 year career in education with Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) as a teacher, assistant principal and, for the past 13 years, principal at Breckinridge-Franklin and Norton Commons Elementary Schools. In 2015 she won a Milken Family Foundation Educator Award, arguably the most prestigious national award for school leaders and teachers. She also received the Kentucky PTA’s Outstanding Educator Award in 2013.

“We are thrilled to hire such a distinguished principal for Maupin,” said Dr. Nate Meyer, assistant superintendent of Accelerated Improvement Schools. “Principal Vitato will connect with the students, staff, families, and community, and we will see that impact immediately. She is an instructional leader with a student-centered focus and will seek to create enriched learning opportunities for her students. We are excited for this new day for Maupin.”

Vitato has degrees from Central Michigan University, Spalding University, and the University of Louisville and received her principal certificate from the University of the Cumberlands. She’s looking forward to sharing her experience with the students, staff and families at Maupin.

“I know the Maupin staff is dedicated to supporting students and families,” Vitato said. “We will work diligently to ensure a climate where students feel safe, supported and engaged and work within our JCPS pillars and systems to provide a high quality learning environment for everyone in the Maupin family.”
