Engelhard Elementary School building

Whitney Young Elementary School students and staff will have a new home next school year. The Jefferson County Board of Education has approved moving Young Elementary into the Engelhard Elementary School building, joining Engelhard’s students and staff. The school will now be called Whitney Young Elementary School at Engelhard and located in the current Engelhard building at 1004 South 1st Street.

The enrollment at the two schools has dropped, precipitating the move to a shared campus. “This is an exciting opportunity for students at Young and Engelhard,” said Dr. Marty Pollio, Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) superintendent. “They will grow, learn, and thrive together, have expanded programming and learning opportunities as well as bus transportation for any child who wants it. It’s a win for these families and JCPS.”

The school building vacated by Whitney Young will be taken over by 6th graders and staff from Hudson Middle School next school year. Hudson’s 7th and 8th graders will remain in Hudson’s current home at 3526 W. Muhammad Ali Blvd. JCPS is designing a new building for Hudson on the old Philip Morris property at 18th and West Broadway. A steel frame for a building that Molina Healthcare had started to build on the site has been demolished and cleared. Barring unforeseen circumstances, construction on a new school building for Hudson could begin before the end of 2025 and be completed in the 2027-28 school year.
