Welcome Back Letter 2023

Class of 2024 and families,

Wow, we've experienced yet another first for the start of school! Despite the bumpy start, we know this is going to be an awesome year.We wanted to touch base about several things, so please keep this email for reference. I have outlined them by category for ease in finding information. But first, a word from our Senior Assistant Principal, Ms. Beaumont.

My name is Tiffany Beaumont and I am your 12 th Grade Assistant Principal. I am so excited about the Class of 2024! We are going to have a lot of fun this year. I wanted to send a few reminders as we head back to school on Monday, 8/21.

  1. The 3 R's: Responsibility, Respect and RIGHT ON TIME!- Please be RIGHT ON TIME to school. Please be RIGHT ON TIME to every class.

  2. The Dress Code-  Here is the dress code here in case you need a copy of it. Please come to school in dress code every day.

  3.  Schedule- All students have a schedule. This is where you are expected to be when you are here at school. You will only need to leave class for an emergency or if you are called out of class. Please spend your time in the classroom and not the halls.

Your 12 th Grade team has already met to start planning for the year. We are ready to go! I can't wait to see you all.

Ms. Beaumont

College Applications:

  • Yes, it is the time to start applying for college! Most schools have an easy-to-use application on their school website. Fill it out and don't forget to submit it

  • Application Fee Waiver: those will be handled through Parchment this year, which has its own section below. Colleges/University will allow their application fee to be waived for students that are on free/reduced lunch. (if you haven't filled out the lunch form on Parent Place, it is essential for determining your status)

  • IMPORTANT: If you are using Common Ap, please only apply to schools you are genuinely interested in and have met the minimum admissions requirements for. It can be a great platform but applying to schools you never intend to attend is wasteful of everyone's time and talents.

Parchment (transcripts and fee waivers for college):

  • You will be sent an email on your JCPS email account with directions for how to access your account set-up. It is very important to use this link to ensure you are connected to the correct Central High School. If not, you have to search it and we have had students connect on accident to Centrals' across the country.

  • Parchment is a free service for sending transcripts, and this year we are using it for Application Fee Waivers- we will talk more about it in our 1 st class meeting.

College Fair/College Small Groups/Campus Visits:

  • Central High College Fair is Thursday September 21 st

    • All seniors will attend

  • HBCU Showcase is Thursday, November 9 th

    • More details to come on attending this event

  • NACAC College Fair- International Convention Center, Sat October 21 st

    • This one is on your own

    • Register HERE

  • College Interest Meetings

    • Happen throughout the year at Central

    • Small groups designed for networking with a school you are interested in attending

    • They are posted in the Google Classroom and on the CHS Post-secondary Site

  • Campus Visits:

    • We try to do a few each year to popular schools within day trip distance

    • Those are posted in the Google Classroom and on the CHS Post-secondary Site

    • Usually these include UK, UL, EKU, NKU, and IUS but we do try to go to others if possible

Senior Tux/Drape pictures:

  • Make-up date: TBD, we are working with the photographer to find a date soon

  • If you would like to purchase your Yearbook picture (drape/tux photo) below is the ordering link. This is only for CHS students and families so please don't share the link on social media etc.

  • Yearbook Drape/Tux photo ordering

Schedule changes:

  • I have gotten through schedule requests made through Wednesday, August 9 th. They have asked us to stop any further schedule changes until next week.

    • If you requested after 8/9, I will get to those requests the week of Aug 21 st

    • If you requested on or before 8/9 you should have heard from me via text or email

  • As a reminder, each student must have a full schedule. Even if that includes classes that are not required for graduation. We do the best we can to fulfill at least some your elective requests, but it is not always possible.

Co-op/ Work -based Learning:

  • Mr. Mennen is the teacher for Co-op (Work Based Learning) for general co-oping, his room is by the library

    • Work Based Learning packets must be picked up from him

    • Once he approves your co-op, then Ms. Oliver changes the schedule

    • Typically, students release at 10:45 but we can do 12:45 releases as well

Mid-year Graduation:

  • Mid-year graduation forms are available the counseling center

  • They should be returned to Ms. Oliver in the counseling center

  • Individual meetings will take place in early Sept to make a detailed plan for potential mid-year

I know that is a lot of information, but it's important. Just remember students can always find this information and more in the Class of 2024 Google Classroom. I also post many items on the CHS College & Post-secondary Readiness. Please use it as a resource along with the Central High School website.

Seniors, we look forward to seeing each of you next week! Thank you for your partnership.

Best Regards,

 Summer 2023 Newletter

 Class of 2024 Families,

Ms. Beaumont and I look forward to working with the Class of 2024 this next school year. Below I have linked the Central High School College & Post-secondary Site, which is a rich resource of information for Senior class families.

I hope you will take some time to navigate the pages, so you'll know where to go in the coming school for information. Students need to also check their class level Google Classroom multiple times a week when we are back in school for current information, events, and deadlines. I ask that you always check these resources before texting or emailing me a college, graduation, financial aid, or senior event question.

Summer before the senior year of high school is time for finding, researching, and making a select list of college, trade school, or military options. This will set you up to be ready to applying beginning in August.

A few more pro tips:

  1. If you are working a summer job; save money to pay for cap/gown, seniors dues, prom and more

  2. Get your school choices down to 3-6 schools. There is no benefit in applying for schools you are not interested in or that you can not get admitted to because of not meeting minimum requirements. Think of it this way 1-3 "I know for sure, I got this!" and 1-3 "Competitve" choices.

  3. Do not forget to look at cost! Don't be intimidated, but also know up front what kind or money you'll need to earn through scholarships, FAFSA grants/loans, and even family contributions.

  4. DO NOT PROCRASTINATE! Procrastination will be your enemy as a senior, there is a lot going on and you want to be able to not get overwhelmed.

Have a safe and rest filled summer! See you on July 28th at Senior registration/pictures day, more details on your report time will be delivered in July. This is the ONLY opportunity we can guarantee for taking senior yearbook pictures. We will work on a make-up date, but that is not scheduled yet.

All the Best,

Brianne Oliver
