Family Resource Center

Mission & Vision

Our mission is to reduce and eliminate non-academic barriers to learning for our students. We understand non-academic barriers to include circumstances such as economic insecurity, lack of access to physical and mental health care, limited opportunity for academic enrichment and social and emotional development, family and community instability, truancy, and a host of other situations that impede a student's ability to learn and perform in the classroom.

Our vision is to provide excellent school-based family support in an environment where everyone feels welcome and everyone belongs. We will do whatever it takes to meet the needs, and advocate for the best interests of, our students, their families, and our community.

We carry out our work by developing community partnerships and coordinating the following:

  • Truancy prevention and attendance interventions

  • Referrals for basic needs (food, clothing, housing, etc.)

  • Tutoring and mentoring programs

  • Physical and mental health care referrals

  • School-based counseling and mental health services

  • Parent University sessions and parenting workshops

  • Family Nights

  • Bowen Food Pantry

  • Holiday assistance sponsorships and donations (food, clothing, books, board games, etc.)

  • Referrals for procurement of other family needs (child care, health insurance, etc.)

  • Service learning, character education, and academic enrichment programming

  • After-school and summer programming referrals

  • Individualized student and family support as-needed

Family Resource and Youth Services Centers have been designed to provide school-based family support through programs and partnerships that promote early learning and successful transition to school, academic achievement and well-being, and graduation and transition to adult life. The Family Resource Center at Bowen Elementary was established in 1995.
